Patrol Division & Traffic Safety
The Patrol Division is comprised of uniformed police officers often referred to as the "backbone" of a police department. Its fundamental responsibilities include handling all emergencies, daily service calls and ensuring public safety seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. NPPD’s Patrol Division handles these tasks while maintaining the distinctive philosophy of proactive policing. Mobile patrols are highly visible and target specific problems or criminal trends within the boundaries of the Borough. This style of policing is efficient and results in the preservation of the high quality of life that the residents and businesses of North Plainfield have grown to expect.
The Patrol Section is structured with two platoons of uniformed officers. Each platoon is comprised of supervisors, a contingent of patrolmen, and communication dispatchers. The number of patrolmen and dispatchers vary depending on the workload of the particular shift.
The Patrol Division follows a strict chain-of-command.
The Traffic Safety Division is staffed by a sergeant and two specially trained traffic safety officers. Traffic Safety is accountable for a multitude of duties, requiring its officers to be diversified in many ways, including certification in traffic crash reconstruction. This specialization is required because the unit is responsible for investigating all serious and fatal motor vehicle crash investigations that occur within the Borough. Officers are often called upon to answer a variety of complaints ranging from speeding problems and hazardous school bus routes to view obstructions and traffic site plan reviews. The primary goal of the unit is to make travel safer within the Borough through motor vehicle enforcement and education. Officers frequently target problem areas utilizing state of the art radar and laser technologies to enforce the posted speed limits. This "zero tolerance" approach has proven to be an effective measure in the reduction of crashes investigated by the Department.
Parking Authority primarily manages and enforce parking regulations & related Ordinances, ensuring sufficient parking spaces and facilitating the smooth flow of traffic. This includes managing parking meters, issuing citations for violations, and potentially overseeing parking cameras. They also often handle permit parking and may be responsible for the overall maintenance and operation of parking facilities
