FATAL ACCIDENT
North Plainfield BORO., N.J. North Plainfield Police Chief Alan McKay announced that on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 6:00 pm, a violent storm passed through the Borough of North Plainfield and several surrounding communities. The storm brought heavy rain and winds making roadways difficult to maneuver. A single-occupant motorist, was traveling eastbound on Greenbrook Road in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 700 block at approximately 6:30 P.M. As storm conditions worsened and intensified it appears the motorist pulled to the north side of the road temporarily. As the motorist was pulled over and stopped a large tree and a large portion of the sidewalk uprooted and fell across Greenbrook Road landing on top of the victim’s vehicle and damaging a second vehicle and several area homes. Emergency personnel from the NPPD & NPFD immediately responded to the scene. The victim’s vehicle had live electrical wires draped across the vehicle as well as the unstable tree making rescue efforts even more difficult. The single occupant, a 44-year-old female from Middlesex NJ was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of injuries she sustained from the accident. NPPD personnel remained at the scene throughout the night awaiting crews from PSEG to de-energize the power lines as well as a local tree service & crane to remove the tree from the vehicle. The Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene and removed the victim from the vehicle. An autopsy will be performed at a later date to determine the cause of death. Chief McKay requests anyone with information relating to this incident contact the North Plainfield Police Department Traffic Safety Division at (908) 769-2931. NOTE: The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence.
