FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT


North Plainfield BORO., N.J. North Plainfield Police Chief Alan McKay announced that on Tuesday, March
4, 2025, at 1:16 pm, a two-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Greenbrook Road and Duer Street in
the Borough of North Plainfield. Kavon A. Powell-Coleman of Plainfield N.J. was traveling south on Duer
Street in a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a second vehicle, a 2014 Ford F-150 pick-up truck was traveling
westbound on Greenbrook Road. The Ford F-150 was operated by a male driver from Bridgewater N.J. and
contained two additional passengers, also of Bridgewater N.J.


The on-scene investigation indicates that Powell-Coleman failed to stop at a Stop sign, entered the
intersection and struck the passenger side of the Ford F-150. The Ford F-150 was redirected onto a front lawn
on Duer Street, and the Jeep remained in the roadway.


Powell-Coleman sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention. The driver of the Ford F-150 also
sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention. The Ford F-150’s two additional passengers, a male
and female both were transported to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick for injuries sustained in the crash.


Victor Manuel Amaya, the rear-seat passenger in the Ford F-150 died at RWJ New Brunswick from injuries
sustained in this crash on the evening of March 7, 2025.


Kavon A. Powell-Coleman was issued motor vehicle summonses for: Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, Careless
Driving, Failure to Produce Driving Credentials, Driving an Uninsured Vehicle, Failure to Use Seat Belts, and
having an Open Container of Alcohol in his Vehicle.


The crash remains under investigation by the Somerset County CART team and members of the North
Plainfield Police Department Traffic Safety Division.
